Seattle Commits to Dockless Bike Share

After the failure of its municipal bike share system Pronto!, Seattle was one of the first to regulate the operation of dockless bke share companies in the city. Now it's one-year pilot program is permanent.

Seattle will expand its program that allows private dockless bike share companies to operate in the city. The Seattle City Council has voted to make a one-year pilot project permanent. The program allows up to four bike share companies to operate 5,000 bikes each. The companies pay the city $250,000 a year for the permit to operate.

The cap of four bike share companies is still aspirational, however. Three companies currently operate in the city, Spin, LimeBike, and ofo. According to the article, only LimeBike has sought the permit so far, while ofo is planning to leave the city.
