With the ambition of becoming "the Amazon of healthcare," the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has announced a $2 billion expansion plan that includes building three major new hospitals in Pittsburgh.

The hospitals will be built on existing medical campuses: UPMC Mercy, UPMC Shadyside, and UPMC Presbyterian in the heart of the Oakland Innovation District. UPMC is partnering with Microsoft to bring state-of-the-art medical technologies to the hospitals, which will specialize in cancer, organ transplants, and heart and vision care. Designs for the new facilities will be chosen through an international competition.

In the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Ben Schmitt contextualizes the announcement with a roundup of healthcare projects planned for the region over the next five years.
