Faced with "mounting costs" due to the impacts of climate change, a collection of coastal communities in California have taken legal action against the fossil fuel industry.
The Associated Press reports that the counties of Marin and San Mateo, in Northern California, along with the city of Imperial Beach, in Southern California, have filed legal complaints against 37 oil, gas, and coal companies.
The communities are already experiencing the environmental effects of climate change and sea level rise, and the complaints allege that these industries new about the impacts of their industries, but concealed evidence of that harm.
