The self-driving car of the future is getting closer to becoming a reality, with GM and Lyft partnering to launch autonomous vehicles for the ride-hailing service within the year.
GM's investment in ride-hailing service Lyft may result in your future Lyft ride being in an autonomous driving vehicle. Reporting in Silicon Beat, Marisa Kendall writes that the partnership could see the self-driving Lyft cars hitting the road very soon. A pilot program is scheduled to launch within the year in an as yet unannounced city. In the short term, a Lyft driver will still be in the driver's seat to take over in case anything goes wrong, but eventually the driver will be removed. Citing an article in the Wall Street Journal, Kendall writes that the cars will use technology from Cruise Automation—a recent GM acquisition.
