Graves made news recently as the city of Portland considered plans to demolish one of his most famous buildings, the Portland Building. In an obituary for The Oregonian, Brad Schmidt noted that city officials now intend to spend $100 million to renovate the building.
Graves gained acclaim for more than just his buildings—he also designed many acclaimed consumer goods. Alessi has already announced plans to release a special edition of Graves's 9093 kettle to commemorate his life as a "design hero."
