“MythBusters” has put another urban debate to bed. According to a recent episode of the Discovery Channel show, roundabouts really are more efficient than four-way stops.

Show hosts Adam and Jamie found that a four-street roundabout could handle about 20 percent more traffic than a four-way stop sign.  But while the episode solved the efficiency question, Alex Ihnen points out, it didn’t touch upon other variables, like collisions and pedestrian or bicycle use.

The manifold benefits of roundabouts have been addressed in (less entertaining) reports by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration, and others.
