Zipcar is a car sharing service based in Cambridge, Mass. The program allows you access to a car for either several hours or the whole day. Illinois contracted with the company giving its state employees access to nearly 500 vehicles.
According to Alejandra Cancino, Zipcar will add a fleet of four vehicles in Springfield -- two near the Amtrak station and two by the Capitol Complex.
The state negotiated a $6-per-hour rate until April of 2013 for up to 180 miles, with an additional 25 cents-per-mile charge for every mile after that, said Alka Nayyar, a spokeswoman for Illinois Central Management Services.
"The program is one of a number of cost-saving initiatives implemented by the department. If the program works, it will eventually weed out high-mileage vehicles and would then eliminate the cost of repairing and maintaining them," according to Nayyer.
