A 15 to 30 percent reduction in traffic is projected if a viable bike network can be created around downtown Athens, but the proposal is off to a rocky start.
"Athens-Clarke County's new bike master plan was supposed to decrease car traffic by offering an alternative but there's one glaring problem, argues cyclist Mark Ralston: stretches of designated bike lanes don't link up with any others, making them attractive only to someone bent on being mowed down by cars. "Many of the proposed routes can't be used," said Ralston. "Last week's attacks show that our nation needs to be less dependent on foreign sources of energy. We need to design communities in which people can get where they need to go by bus and bicycle, not just cars." People in this college town would agree --- but there's disagreement over how to do it."
