NCI Charrette System™ Certificate Training
Wednesday, July 13, 2011 - Friday, July 15, 2011
Harvard University, Graduate School of Design - Executive Education

How can you plan faster, cheaper, and more creatively? How can a collaborative public planning approach lead to the speedy approval of a quality project, while preventing an individual or group from dominating? Complex sustainable and environmental mandates and a large list of well-informed stakeholders make private and public development and planning projects increasingly more difficult to implement.

The NCI Charrette System is a proven accelerated collaborative project management approach that meets the challenge of how to plan increasingly complex projects with smaller budgets. The program addresses all aspects of community planning, including sustainable community plans, regional/comprehensive plans, transportation/infrastructure plans, and development plans. It is a proven flexible three-step framework that can be customized for your project.

The Charrette System certificate program is a hands-on, case study-based training on how to plan and set up a project using a charrette. The program is intended for city and regional planners, developers, land and transportation planning consultants, architects, and citizen activists specializing in sustainable development, transportation, public works, and transit as well as citizen advocacy. NCI certificates of completion are available upon request.

Learning Objectives:

Learn how to create broad stakeholder support, reduce costly rework, and produce a plan with an exceptional design.

Gain a practical, working knowledge of the most advanced charrette-planning tools and techniques used by leaders in the field.

Explore methods for facilitating a public, hands-on workshop that maximizes participation while assuring that no person or group dominates.

Practice using key NCI Charrette System tools and techniques, including: Guiding Principles, Project Charrette Products, Stakeholder Analysis and Outreach, Project Complexity Analysis, Charrette System Roadmap, Charrette Ready Plan, and Charrette Scheduling.

Participants will work in small teams applying the NCI Charrette System to four case study types: sustainable community planning; regional/comprehensive planning; transportation/infrastructure planning; and transit-oriented development planning.

Earn up to 21 AICP, AIA and ASLA continuing education credits.
