Entertainment Mecca Near Staples Center

The L.A. City Council has approved plans for a $1-billion entertainment district on 27 acres around Staples Center.

The new entertainment center will include shopping, dining and a 7,000 seat theater. The Council did, however, postpone a decision on the question of a hotel, and whether to spend millions of dollars in public funds to get one on the site. Supporters of the hotel wanted the entire project held until the hotel was assured, and believe that the city is getting a bad deal. Others believe that the project, even without the hotel, will give a boost to the downtown area around Staples.
