The University of Pennsylvania Press is pleased to announce the release of two new collections in urban studies, Neighborhood and Life Chances: How Place Matters in Modern America and Global Urbanization. Both books are in the Penn Press series The City in the Twenty-First Century.

Neighborhood and Life Chances: How Place Matters in Modern America, edited by Harriet B. Newburger, Eugenie L. Birch, and Susan M. Wachter, brings together researchers from a range of disciplines to demonstrate that place matters in education, physical health, crime, violence, housing, family income, mental health, and discrimination--issues that determine the quality of life among low-income residents of urban areas.

Global Urbanization, edited by Birch and Wachter, surveys the current rapid growth in urban populations and begins to formulate a global urban agenda for the next half century. Drawing from a wide range of disciplines, contributors tackle issues ranging from how cities can keep up with fast-growing housing needs to the possibilities for public-private partnerships in urban governance.

Newburger is Community Development Research Advisor for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Birch is Lawrence C. Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research and Education, Department of City and Regional Planning, PennDesign. Wachter is Richard B. Worley Professor of Financial Management and Professor of Real Estate and Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Professor of City and Regional Planning at PennDesign. Together, Birch and Wachter direct the Penn Institute for Urban Research and are the coeditors of Rebuilding Urban Places After Disaster: Lessons from Hurricane Katrina and Growing Greener Cities: Urban Sustainability in the Twenty-First Century, both available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.
