St. Mary County, MD, is updating its land use code to address issues of sprawl and suburbanization of the rural landscape.
"The proposed code, which is intended to enforce the growth policies set in the county's Comprehensive Plan, embodies a shift in attitude toward development -- with new limits and more powers for local growth-management officials...with a growing concern about the diminishing inventory of affordable housing in St. Mary's, The Board of Commissioners moved in May to consider regulations in the code that would allow developers to build more dwellings if they allocate a still-undetermined percentage of the units in a project for use by low- and moderate-income residents."
