CNU Transportation Summit Registration Now Open!
Congress for the New Urbanism
Over the last few years, CNU's annual transportation summit has become one of the nation's top forums for advancing highly-connected, multimodal transportation networks. CNU's Transportation Summit 2009 in Portland will have experts from fields such as design, planning, and engineering coming together to discuss how cutting-edge advances in multimodal transportation can positively affect our built environment.
Last year's summit in Charlotte was a great success and participants this year can expect to continue the well-informed discussion and debate as we move towards drafting a statement of principles for Sustainable Transportation Networks, the highly interconnected webs of streets and transit that serve as the backbone of livable green communities.
CNU's Project for Transportation Reform, a major contributor to the summit, arose from frustration over funding formulas and road performance standards that use vehicle capacity as a measurement of success. This outdated framework leaves no room for the needs of pedestrians, transit riders, and overall place making. Emerging research showing the safety and efficiency benefits of well-connected urban streets has helped build momentum for sensible policy changes. CNU's summit has been a leading forum for these findings in the past and the 2009 agenda features a number of exciting new studies.
About the event
The summit is a three-day event that will include a working meeting as well as presentations from leading transportation officials including speakers from USDOT, HUD, and other government agencies. Participants will also have the chance to experience Portland's pioneering transport network through hands-and-feet-on tours.
Five tours will be available: a bicycle tour focusing on the city's bikeways, an examination of the city's sustainable green street designs, a tour of the Portland transit mall, and a special visit to the town of Damascus, part of the most recent expansion of Portland's unique urban growth boundary. For more information about the tours and the general conference itinerary, check out the draft agenda on CNU's website.
