Reversing last century's pattern, African Americans are heading back to the South, the only region in the nation where black population has grown during the 1990s.
"The South gained a record number of African Americans during the 1990s, an increase that made it the only region in the country where more blacks arrived than left, according to a new study of census data.... The decisions by many black Americans to settle in the suburbs when they move to the South is having another effect: Studies of 2000 census data show marked declines in black segregation in the South over the 1990s. Areas that are growing quickly are most likely to see decreasing residential segregation."
