Leading from the Middle can help planners succeed
The Leading Institute, Rutgers University
There are plenty of smart planners with good ideas. What made people like Daniel Burnham, Kevin Lynch, Jane Jacobs and Andres Duany more successful than their peers? They knew the most effective ways to influence their audiences.
You can learn to influence, ethically, effectively and efficiently, through Leading from the Middle. This unique program, the only one of its kind designed for urban planners, will challenge you to think and act in new ways and give you the tools to be more influential. Whether you are a project manager or a vice president, you will get valuable knowledge and insights.
Leading from the Middle combines six training workshops with one-to-one executive coaching and group advising. You will learn: to lead colleagues, directors and clients; better ways to persuade; approaches to planning that are better suited for the realities of your job; and to work more effectively in diverse and dynamic conditions. You will also get a 200-plus page guidebook and access to a growing network of planners, architects, community development professionals, lawyers and other professionals in The Leading Institute network. Leading from the Middle is produced by The Leading Institute, which is affiliated with Rutgers University's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.
Leading from the Middle classes will be offered in New York City and Washington D.C., from March to December. Training sessions meet every two or three weeks on Saturdays. The program costs $1,250. Scholarships up to $1,000 are available for nonprofit professionals and members of small budget organizations. To learn more, please go to http://www.theleadinginstitute.org/lm
Leading from the Middle is directed by Leonardo Vazquez, AICP/PP. He is the Director of the Professional Development Institute at the Bloustein School. He is co-author of "Out Front and In Synch" and many other articles on leadership and diversity in planning and community development. He is a founder of the influential Planners for Ethnic and Cultural Diversity Committee; as well as Latinos and Planning, the only national organization focused on planning in Latino communities.
Leading from the Middle is for planning and related professionals who want to promote progressive, positive outcomes in their organizations and communities. We can not promise you will become the next Frederick Law Olmsted, but we can help you be more successful.
