Participants will see a region that is setting the pace for livable communities both inside and outside the Beltway.

While many sessions will explore new trends and technical details, there are also sessions for those who are new to smart growth. The program includes 15 optional tours of model projects – another great way to "see" our nation's capital.

As the movement to act on climate change has reached a tipping point this year, the conference features an opening dialogue with several groundbreaking leaders, who will share their insights about smart-growth policies for reducing greenhouse gases and their environmental impacts. Other sessions will make the connections between climate change, public health and smart growth.

Where are the biggest opportunities in smart growth today – tax codes, zoning regulations, infrastructure finance policies, environmental rules? Saturday's morning plenary will get back to basics, reviewing actions at the federal, state and local level that can have a big impact for a small investment. The conference also takes a close look at how to "green" our infrastructure.

In the closing plenary on the future of transportation, national experts will highlight strategies for ensuring that the tools, funding and incentives to enhance the opportunities for multimodal movement are included in the fed's next transportation funding bill.

Hear the latest success stories on TOD, green building and energy best practices, water resource sustainability, and effective solutions for affordable housing and open space, street design, and mobility needs. Get an update on the current state of eminent domain, and hear how smart growth figures into the immigration debate.

The event also includes many sessions that explore the role of health professionals in influencing community design to help create healthy live, work and play environments in local communities.
