Learn Urban Design Analysis, Infill Development and GIS Basics
Rutgers University, Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy
If you're interested in learning the basics of geographic information systems, analytical techniques in urban design, or how to manage the challenges of infill development, consider taking a course from Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program (BOCEP).
BOCEP is the nation's leading provider of interactive online education for land use and community development professionals. Our courses offer high-quality, interactive, convenient and affordable professional education. Students are taught by expert practitioners and can share ideas with professionals from around the United States. There are no required meetings, and students can access their classrooms at anytime from almost any computer with an Internet connection. The classrooms are open for six months so students can have time to download and review their materials. Each course costs $170 to $270, depending on the level of discount you can receive. Planetizen readers pay only $245, but might be eligible to get even bigger discounts.
The next set of courses start October 31 and end December 9.
Urban Design Analysis is our introductory course in the subject. The course provides students with a basic urban design vocabulary and the necessary tools and techniques for critically analyzing the built environment. Images, illustrations, assigned readings and on-line discussions are used as learning aides.
In Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, students will learn how to use GIS for the work they do in planning, community and economic development, or public policy. Concepts to be explored include spatial query, thematic maps, raster GIS, coordinate systems and data models. Students will work on free or low-cost GIS systems that they themselves can download.
Managing the Challenges of Infill Development is for anyone interested in community development and real estate development. The course explores some best infill development practices and helps answer the question: What to do with all those gaptooth lots?
BOCEP offers many other courses during the year. These include topics in community development, economic development and real estate, planning law and legal issues, professional practice, smart growth and sustainable development, and urban design and placemaking.
