New Publication: South Street By Barbara Mensch; Introduction By Phillip Lopate
Columbia University Press
Columbia University Press is pleased to announce the publication of South Street by Barbara Mensch; Introduction by Phillip Lopate (Cloth, 180 pp., 137 photos, $29.95)
Through stunning photographs and the narratives of workers, Barbara Mensch's new work explores the impact of gentrification on New York's Fulton Fish Market. "South Street" preserves the voices, images, and history of one of New York's most distinctive economic and cultural spaces. The book explores how changes in New York City's economy, urban planning, and real estate affected the fate of the Fulton Fish Market and its workers and led to its recent relocation to Hunts Point in the Bronx.
Beyond capturing the colorful and often moving stories of workers, the book also ponders the impact of specialized business zones and how they shape and give character to a city. Ultimately, the book offers a poignant and incisive exploration of the conflict between urban and working-class traditions and corporate interests in a changing urban landscape.
