MILITARY ENCROACHMENT: COLLABORATIVE LAND USE STRATEGIES
May 10-11, 2007
Recent reports document that sprawl near active military installations and ranges generates incompatible development that makes it more difficult for the military to operate and train-the Department of Defense (DoD) calls this phenomenon Encroachment. Moreover, recent base closures and realignments will transfer thousands of troops and their families to developing rural regions throughout the country, exacerbating existing development pressures for housing and infrastructure. Through a combination of discussion, exercises, and simulations, participants will explore the underlying policy dynamics of encroachment and design and test their own practical solutions.
