April 26-27, 2007
This course is designed for planners, engineers and landscape architects involved with transportation issues. The program will cover: design guidelines that work for bike and pedestrian planning; the latest information on cutting-edge topics like car-sharing, bike-sharing and traffic calming; and case studies of innovative projects from the Washington, DC region and across the US.

INTRODUCTION TO GIS FOR PLANNERS USING ArcGIS 9.1
May 3-4, 2007
Are you just starting out working with GIS applications? Or do you simply need to understand GIS capabilities to do your job effectively? This course provides you with an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) terminology, data requirements, analysis techniques, and GIS output. Participants will also get hands-on experience with basic GIS operations.

MILITARY ENCROACHMENT: COLLABORATIVE LAND USE STRATEGIES
May 10-11, 2007
Recent reports document that sprawl near active military installations and ranges generates incompatible development that makes it more difficult for the military to operate and train-the Department of Defense (DoD) calls this phenomenon Encroachment. Moreover, recent base closures and realignments will transfer thousands of troops and their families to developing rural regions throughout the country, exacerbating existing development pressures for housing and infrastructure. Through a combination of discussion, exercises, and simulations, participants will explore the underlying policy dynamics of encroachment and design and test their own practical solutions.

The Planning Academy at Virginia Tech provides ongoing training for mid-career planning, design and development professionals in a range of implementation-related practice areas.

The Planning Academy can offer:
• Classroom instruction and a well-equipped GIS laboratory at our Falls Church campus
• Practitioner-led site visits, providing first hand knowledge of key planning concepts
• Individualized training in your office, designed to meet the needs of your organization
