DEFINITION

Under Direction of the Community Development Director, plan, manage, direct and supervise the work of the Planning Division of the Community Development Department involving: the development, definition, interpretations, and application of land use policies and/or regulation necessary to implement regulatory and policy programs; the management of programs and supervision of personnel to accomplish City planning program goals; to perform the most difficult and complex of planning and development projects to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local regulations governing planning and the environment; to provide highly complex staff assistance to the Director, and perform other duties as assigned

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level in the professional planning class series.
The position is characterized by the broad range of independence within policy and procedural limitations established by the City and Community Development Director. The Principal Planner is distinguished from the Senior Planner in that the Senior Planner does not have the supervisory/management responsibility of a section or program area. Successful incumbents in the Principal Planner classification are able to effectively supervise the Planning team while functioning as an integral part of the team, possess a strong customer service ethic, and have a pro-active and creative approach to problem solving.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Direction is received from the Community Development Director.

The position exercises supervision over all subordinate planning staff, office support staff, interns and temporary employees.
