Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program Offers Planning Professionals More

Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University

Now in its third year, Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program offers more courses for planning and public policy professionals. Between October 2006 and June 2007, we will be offering more than 30 courses in:
• Urban design and placemaking
• Community and economic development
• Planning law and legal issues
Smart growth and sustainable development
• Leadership and management

BOCEP courses are convenient, high quality and affordable.

You can access your course from almost any computer with an Internet connection, and most courses have no required meetings. You participate in the course at your convenience. (But these aren't self-paced courses; they're guided by instructors who have significant practical expertise in their fields.) Courses last 5 ½ weeks, which gives you plenty of time to learn from and share ideas with professionals from around the United States (and sometimes internationally.). Each classroom is open for six months, so students can also use their class as a reference.

We've served more than 170 professionals since April 2005. About 90% of those surveyed said they would recommend BOCEP to their colleagues. An overwhelming majority said they learned a lot in their courses and that the BOCEP model encouraged learning. BOCEP courses are taught at a graduate level and are designed for serious learners.

BOCEP courses are $260. Most required materials are available free, and students never pay more than $60 for required readings. In addition to the course, every student can join, free of charge, the BOCEP Network Forum. The Forum is a growing community of professionals who have taken BOCEP courses. Members can find chat and discussion boards on various subjects, announcements, and an annotated list of more than 100 planning resources.
"I find myself employing the information I gained in the urban design program a year after the classes ended," said Charles D'Aprix, President of Economic Development Visions in Washington, D.C. "The classes were structured in such a manner as to provide real-world applicability, but also to spark the interest of the student to continue self-education."
