Paving Temporary Paradise: The High Cost of Free Parking
SDAPA c/o Mooney Jones & Stokes
The San Diego Section of the American Planning Association (SDAPA and the San Diego Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) present a provocative one-day symposium to expore the implications and impacts of parking policies and designs on our communities, identify both the value and cost of parking to our economy, mobility, urban form and quality of life, share innovative approaches to providing parking, and stimulate thought and action to influence our thinking (and rethinking) about parking policy, decisions, regulations and design.
Nationally recognized urban planning and parking policy expert Dr. Donald Shoup (UCLA) will highlight the findings of his recent book The High Cost of Free Parking - sharing his prescriptions for overhauling years of well intended but misguided parking policy. City of San Diego Planning Director Bill Anderson, FAICP will kick-off the day-long symposium with a thoughtful overview, and San Diego Planning Commissioner and Landscape Architect Kathy Garcia, FASLA will moderate the event. A variety of "parking practitioners" including planning consultants, redevelopment agency leaders, private developers, and financers, will weigh-in on the practical application of Shoup's theories as they relate to market driven parking, reducing traffic and creating better places. The event will culminate with a panel discussion among all speakers and attendees.
Everyone is welcome!
