This course examines how the concepts of sustainability can be integrated into "real world" development. Case studies from across the globe will be explored with a particular emphasis on the United States and Australia.

Topics include: smart growth and transportation planning, land use and urban design, planning for pedestrian, cycling, and transit environments, real estate and economic development, real estate financing, public-private partnerships, and the role of the community, government, and private developers in redevelopment projects.

The course fee includes five short writing assignments (optional) that ask students to relate the course material to projects within the students' local community. The instructor will read and give feedback for each assignment.
