Request for Qualifications - Urban Park Design
Downtown Greensboro Inc.
GREENSBORO N.C. – Downtown Greensboro Inc. is seeking statements of qualifications for the design of urban park in the center of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.
Located on approximately 2 acres, the park site is located on Greensboro's main street. This new park will link the main street's commercial development to the city's cultural district, which includes the Cultural Arts Center, a children's museum, central library, historical museum, and YWCA. Three Fortune 500 companies have offices within one block of the park; one overlooks the site.
The proposed park is a signature project in an award-winning downtown master plan and the cornerstone for an extensive revitalization effort. Already, current construction and renovation projects in downtown Greensboro total $61 million, including a $6 million multimodal transportation center, $5 million regional theatre, residential construction, and the International Civil Rights Museum. Another $43 million in downtown projects are in the planning/design phase. This includes a $20 million minor-league ballpark, scheduled to open in spring 2005.
The park will be 100% privately funded. Action Greensboro, a nonprofit organization of foundations and businesses, has committed the $5-6 million for the construction budget of Urban Park. Action Greensboro commissioned Downtown Greensboro Inc. to manage the Park's design and construction
Vision for the master plan and the park comes from a collaborative process of community workshops between stakeholders, communities, sponsoring organizations and city entities. A six-month community input process for the park itself will deliver a detailed design program as the framework for its final design. Because it is heart space for downtown, this center city park must reflect the personality and heritage of the community.
Submission of qualifications must be received by March 05, 2004 at 12pm.
