ECCO Sustainability Workshops Across the U.S and Canada During August 2003

Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations

During August 2003, the Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations is sponsoring a series of one-day sustainability workshops across the U.S. and Canada. Internationally renowned speakers will present how concrete fits into sustainable construction, and how concrete can be used to gain LEED points. Special presentations on urban planning and city design, and eco-industrial parks will be woven into the program at six locations.

Dr. Katie Williams, Reader at Oxford-Brookes University, will present Achieving Sustainable Urban Design at the Development Project Scale: Lessons from Europe. She will be speaking in Toronto, August 11; Montreal, August 12; Chicago, August 15; Atlanta, August 21; and Pittsburgh, August 22. Dr. Williams has co-authored Achieving Sustainable Urban Form (2000, Routledge, London) and The Compact City: A Sustainable Urban Form? (1996, Routledge, London.)

At the Hartford workshop, a special presentation on eco-industrial parks will be made. Peter C. Lowitt, AICP, Director/Land Use Administrator for the Devens Enterprise Commission will present Eco-Industrial Development: 101 in Hartford, Connecticut, August 26. This commission focuses on the sustainable redevelopment of the former Fort Devens in Massachusetts (4,400 acre former army base).

The ECCO Road Show will visit 12 cities in 24 days: Atlanta, Chicago, Hartford, Los Angeles, Montreal, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver. The audience for the road show includes specifiers, architects, planners and engineers - concrete experts and sustainability experts interested in learning more about concrete's benefits. Design companies with LEED accredited staff are encouraged to attend. There are promotion opportunities with table top space at $300, which includes one registration to a workshop.
