MAXimizing Success: Crandall Arambula Wins National AIA Honor Award
Crandall Arambula, PC
Crandall Arambula, PC received the highly-acclaimed 2003 National American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award for Urban and Regional Design for its Interstate MAX Light Rail Transit Corridor Revitalization Strategy.
The strategy identifies the redevelopment opportunities of key parcels at six station areas along the corridor. The approach for each station takes into account each neighborhood's unique community, social, economic, and physical site conditions. In conjunction with an inclusive public-involvement process, the team developed plans for each station that identify:
• neighborhood and employment centers
• strong pedestrian environments with connections to transit stations
• affordable housing opportunities
• public amenities such as parks and open space
The 2003 AIA awards jury made the following comments: "Sensitive integration of urban design and transit... Goes beyond the plan Very thorough exploration. This is a buildable, realistic project The development around stations will be more predictable and better for each neighborhood than without this plan Six stops, each station is responsive to its neighborhood."
This is the second National AIA Honor Award for Urban and Regional Design Crandall Arambula has received. The firm was also recognized for its Downtown Racine, Wisconsin Development Plan in 2001. Currently, the firm is preparing a downtown urban design framework plan for Knoxville, Tennessee.
