On-line Planning Courses
Planning Education at a Distance
The Ohio State University has just launched its new Planning Education at a Distance (PED) program. This is an Internet based educational tool that provides planners and government officials with on-line urban and regional planning related continuing education opportunities. Through the integration of audio/video components, PowerPoint slides, and reading materials, PED provides participants with hands-on training to strengthen skills needed to both manage land development through planning and bring new planning techniques to your community. The result is a web-based learning experience very similar to the physical classroom but in a much more "on-demand" framework.
PED provides education opportunities designed specifically for Planning Commissioners and other public officials, such as Basics in Zoning. PED also offers continuing education programs for professional planners, such as Design Review. All of the PED courses qualify for Kentucky and Tennessee Planning Continuing Education credit. Many of the courses qualify for AICP continuing education credit. PED is a great way to earn continuing education credit conveniently from your home or office.
Each course allows participants to move at their own pace. Participants can stop and come back at any time to complete the course. Each course is designed to be completed in ½ day or less. Each class includes presentations by experts in their field, as well as case studies by planners, developers and public officials.
The first two courses, Introduction to Zoning and Design Review are available beginning December 1, 2002. If you sign up for a PED course by the end of December you will be able to take advantage of our introductory price of $40.
Basic Issues in Zoning: 2 CEUs: is perfect for Planning and Zoning Commissioners, City Council members, County Commissioners and Township Trustees and those professionals new to zoning. This course introduces the basics of zoning, including the legal basis of zoning, types of zoning, variances, planned unit developments, conditional use permits and nonconforming uses.
Design Review: 2 CEUs: This course examines how design review can be used in communities. Examples of how design review can be used for big box retailers and infill development are included.
