NANAIMO: CITY OF THE RISING STAR

NANAIMO: CITY OF THE RISING STAR

Home Sweet Home

RENEW NANAIMO: 2002, by planners Roger Kemble and Charles Christopherson, offers a vision for the future. Addressing questions local politics and media shy away from, it looks at the city and region within the context of the whole adding up to more than the sum of its parts.

The major locally difficult political issue is the effect North Nanaimo shopping malls and suburban sprawl have on downtown.

RENEW NANAIMO: 2002 sees Downtown as an urban culture park and maritime welcome attraction of interest to Alaska cruise ship passengers, local residents, potential conventioneers and day visitors from a pedestrian ferry link to the mainland.

The main attraction will be a stained glass canopy, "Galeria de Galiano," over the main downtown street. The design of which, chosen by an international design competition, will hoepfully attract world wide attention.

Medium density housing, sited within ubiquitous public urban space amenities, surrounding the urban culture park, will add a critical mass population to stimulate year ‘round activity.

A colourful pedestrian-friendly jitney will provide convenient, especially for seniors who are expected to be most numerous, access to all part of downtown.

A 1,050-acre park, financed by the development of an adjacent 440-unit village, will add much needed park amenity to North Nanaimo.
