Zimmerman's firm specializes in the analysis of compact and sustainable development; mixed-income, mixed-tenure redevelopment; mixed-use urban revitalization; traditional neighborhood developments and integrated-use master-planned communities. He was one of the framers of the Charter of the Congress for New Urbanism. He is a frequent lecturer at universities, including Columbia, Harvard, Miami, Rutgers, and Yale.
