A proposed transit line that would connect three New York City boroughs not named Manhattan has new, powerful political support.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a plan to revive a plan to use existing freight rail line for a new public transit line connecting southern Brooklyn and Queens.
Governor Hochul has renamed the proposed line, previously known as the Triboro Line, as the "Interborough Express."
Under its previous moniker, the Interborough Express was a favorite cause of the Regional Plan Association (RPA). The RPA most recently detailed the proposal with a policy brief in published 2016, but first proposed the idea in A Region at Risk: The Third Regional Plan for the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Metropolitan Area.
Gov. Hochul announced support for the plan in the annual State of the State address on Wednesday, providing the latest evidence of the state's new direction in transportation planning since Hochul's predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, resigned in 2021. In October, Gov. Hochul announced a "thorough review" of the proposed to LaGuardia AirTrain, a controversial project championed by Cuomo.
