Four teams have been selected to build and operate a climate change research hub on New York's Governors Island, reports Matt Hickman. The winning proposal will have access to as much as $150 million in capital funding from the Trust for Governors Island and the City of New York to develop the project, which could bring a projected $1 billion in economic benefits to the city and help develop innovative climate resilience tools on a previously undeveloped, rezoned patch of the island.

"Now open year-round, the island is a ferry-accessible recreational gem just off the tip of Lower Manhattan and home to National Park Service-administered historic sites, public art and cultural venues, the New York Harbor School, a luxury camping retreat, and a popular 43-acre park among other attractions." The new center, according to the city, will "support the research, development, and demonstration of equitable climate solutions for New York City that can be scaled and applied globally" and create around 7,000 jobs.

The four finalists will enter a Request for Proposals process to refine their proposals. The article outlines the four teams, their partners, and their goals and ambitions for the project. While the proposals vary in their details, each one highlights the focus on education, collaborative spaces, and facilities that can help researchers and scientists develop and prototype climate adaptation solutions.
