In Manhattan, a contentious debate has been brewing over on-street parking and how that space could be used for something other than storing cars.
At an Upper West Side community board meeting earlier this month, Manhattan residents on both sides of a debate about the future of the city’s free on-street parking showed up in droves.
Supporters of parking reform ultimately logged a victory. The board approved a resolution calling on the New York City Department of Transportation to examine alternative management of and uses for curbside parking.
"While supporters say the time has come to reexamine policies around curbside space in a neighborhood where roughly three-quarters of residents don't drive, opponents see the resolution as the beginning of a coup against their traditional access to free parking on city streets," writes Jake Offenhartz.
