9/11 Memorial Design Competition Attracts Thousands

The 9/11 Memorial competition is 'the largest open design competition of its kind.'

Thousands of entries for the 9/11 Memorial design competition "came from 62 countries and every state but Alaska. The total is more than three times the number submitted for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial competition and eight times the number submitted for the Oklahoma City National Memorial."The competition is administered by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and the memorial will be owned, constructed, operated and maintained by the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. According to the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, "the foundation is meant to provide private financing for the memorial, so that the development corporation's remaining money, received as part of the $21 billion federal aid package to New York, can be used for other rebuilding projects."
