Spring is arriving at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, where the first tulips of the season are beginning to bloom. In January, staff and volunteers planted 35,000 tulip bulbs in the Promenade area, setting the stage for a breathtaking display of color. While the first flowers are opening in early March, the peak bloom is expected later in the month, when visitors will be treated to a vibrant spectacle of tulips in various hues and patterns.

Tulip blooms at Descanso Gardens don’t all appear at once but unfold gradually throughout March and into April, depending on the weather. This year’s first blooms align with previous seasons, typically emerging in late February or early March. With upcoming rainy days, the exact timing of peak bloom may vary, so visitors are encouraged to check the garden’s social media for updates. The tulip display is part of a broader seasonal transformation at Descanso, where cherry blossoms are also beginning to bloom in the Japanese Garden.

Visitors can experience this stunning floral showcase by purchasing admission or becoming a Descanso Gardens member. Beyond the tulips and cherry blossoms, new whimsical elements have been added to the Descanso railroad, enhancing the garden’s charm. As spring approaches, the garden continues to be a picturesque escape, offering a colorful and serene retreat for nature lovers.
