The city failed to meet a deadline for building housing on lots purchased with federal funds distributed after Hurricane Harvey.
“The City of Houston must return at least $45 million in federal funding to the state after failing to follow through on its promise to build affordable housing with the money,” reports Shannon Ryan for ABC 13.
The city purchased three lots with the intent of building hundreds of housing units on them, but could not get the construction started in time to meet a state deadline. “On Wednesday, the Houston City Council started that process, beginning discussions about listing the lot.”
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, Houston has the second-most severe shortage of affordable rental homes in the nation.
