Ninety years after its initial proposal, the South Shore Line is finally getting a double track to speed up trains and add capacity.

"It took 90 years, but Indiana officials think that a double track for the South Shore from Gary to Michigan City, along with a line extension from Hammond south to Dyer, could finally happen," Mary Wisniewski reports for the Chicago Tribune. The double track will allow the South Shore Line to accommodate more passengers and speed up trains.
The line, which connects Chicago, northwest Indiana and ends in Michigan City, Michigan, will also get some facility upgrades. "The project will also improve stations along the line, and add new stations," Wisniewski reports.
