Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of professional planning duties related to current planning.
- Supports the Town Planner by reviewing plans, preparing staff reports, and preparing Findings of Fact for variances, and special exceptions.
- Performs all necessary functions in support of the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
- Provides information and assistance to the public on planning related matters, including zoning and subdivision control ordinances and other land use applications.
- Assist the Town Planner with the ongoing process of evaluating and implementing changes to policies, procedures, codes, and ordinances relating to department objectives, goals, and standards.
- Attend all training sessions and meetings as required.
- Collects a variety of statistical data, prepares reports and maps on topics such as census information, land use, and growth rates.
- Performs field inspections to gather data relevant to the development review process and/or to verify that development projects comply with approved plans.
- Assist with filing and organization of planning documents and public submittals.
- Determines zoning compliance through zoning research use of zoning related ordinances, inspection and development plan review.
- Ability to coordinate and effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other town departments, contractors, vendors, and the public. Including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Town issues.
- This position is subject to the rules, policies, and operating procedures established by the department and the Town of Danville.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround time, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Qualifications and skills
- Assistant Planner position requires a degree in urban planning, public policy, or a related area of study.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional planning experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
- Must have the ability to remain on task at all times, while having the ability to work with minimal supervision at times.
- Advance knowledge of the philosophies, principals, practices, and techniques of planning.
- Knowledge of effective writing techniques, principles and practice of research, and data collection.
- Must have the ability to establish a good working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, other department employees, and the public.
- Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
- Organizational skills and able to manage information in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ability to utilize computer technology such as calculators, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Must have basic knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ability to understand information from various sources to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Must have a safe work record with good ethics and dependable attendance record.
- This position is subject to the Town of Danville’s Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Work is performed in a standard office environment; however employees may be expected to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather.
- Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, and use a telephone.
- Work some evenings.
- Deal with the public in a calm, constructive, and reasonable manner.
- Read and analyze documents and use a computer.
- Lift a maximum of 25 pounds.
