Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a vibrant city known for its rich German heritage, scenic landscapes, and thriving tourism industry. With a population of approximately 11,500, the city offers a unique blend of small-town charm and economic vitality.
Fredericksburg operates under a Council-Manager government, with a Mayor and four City Council members elected at-large.
The Development Services Department plays a key role in guiding the City's growth while preserving its historic charm. The department oversees planning, zoning, permitting, inspections, and historic preservation, working closely with key advisory boards. With a budget of $1.44 million and a team of seven employees, the department is currently implementing a new Unified Development Code and refining short-term rental policies.
Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Director of Development Services will lead a high-performing team dedicated to planning, zoning, permitting, and historic preservation. This role requires a dynamic leader with a bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Public Administration, or a related field, along with at least 10 years of experience in planning or development services, including 5 years in a leadership role. AICP certification is required, and a master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in historic district preservation, Unified Development Code (UDC) implementation, and affordable housing programs. Familiarity with permitting systems such as MyGovernmentOnline (MGO) is a plus.
The City of Fredericksburg offers a competitive salary targeted at +\- $160,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.
