Portland, Maine: 409 Cumberland Avenue Apartments Add Affordable Housing and Promote Sustainable Food and Healthy Living

HUD User publishes a series of case studies based on federal, state, and local strategies that increase affordable housing opportunities and support sustainable community development. The projects and community development efforts featured in these reports have demonstrated innovation through a multitude of partnerships and initiatives.

Opened in 2015, the apartments at 409 Cumberland Avenue in Portland, Maine, add 57 new units of housing to a former industrial neighborhood close to downtown. This award-winning, mixed-income housing project is not only adding to the city's supply of affordable housing, but is also helping to realize the goals outlined in Portland's 2030 comprehensive plan by supporting sustainable and local food systems. Through its rooftop vegetable garden tended by residents, demonstration kitchen, and green building elements, 409 Cumberland cultivates community along with sustainability.
