The Master of Science in Sustainable Urban Management (MSSUM) is an accelerated graduate program that addresses the global challenges of sustainable development. Designed to be completed in one-year, the degree provides urban professionals working in a variety of fields with the knowledge and skills essential for understanding the multiplicity of inter-related urban systems and crafting the necessary policy interventions that facilitate the creation of sustainable, healthy, safe, and resilient communities.

The program is housed within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The University of Illinois has a long and rich history in the training of professionals working on urban and regional policy issues, dating back to 1913.
