Michael Dudley

With a multidisciplinary background that includes degrees in City Planning, Library and Information Studies and Fine Arts, Michael Dudley worked as a professional librarian for two large Canadian urban public libraries and since 2001 has acted as a "planning librarian" and researcher for the Institute of Urban Studies at the University of Winnipeg (IUS). At IUS he conducts community-based and public interest research and teaches urban sustainability, and as an adjunct faculty with the University of Manitoba he has taught environmental psychology, city history and thesis preparation courses.
Through his involvement in both of Winnipeg's major universities, he has spent many years assisting urban studies and planning students with their research, particularly for their theses and practicums.
In addition to conducting research and assisting others with theirs, Michael is busy as a writer and editor. He is the book review editor for the Canadian Journal of Urban Research, and is a regular book reviewer for The Winnipeg Free Press. As well, he has recently been invited to join the editorial board of Progressive Planning Magazine. Since 2001 he has contributed several op-ed pieces for Planetizen and has recently become a regular contributor to Alternet.org. He has also long been a dedicated news correspondent for Planetizen. He blogs on urban issues for the IUS at http://citystates.typepad.com.
