The San Mateo County Transit District serves nearly 100,000 customers each weekday on its SamTrans buses, Redi-Wheel paratransit vehicles, Caltrain commuter rail cars and shuttles, as well as a robust capital program. The Transit District, which is in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, also is the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The agency is currently seeking a Manager, Government Affairs to add to its valued team.

In this key role, the Manager, Government Affairs will be responsible for governmental relations and legislative policy requirements for the San Mateo County Transit District, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority programs. Essential duties include the preparation of annual legislative policy programs, coordinating and advocating agency policy and legislative objectives with both internal staff and external governmental agencies, and maintaining professional relationships with San Mateo County's legislative delegation in Sacramento and Washington, DC. The Manager, Government Affairs will direct advocacy for federal appropriations and state discretionary funding programs, advise Executive staff on legislative strategy, manage the preparation and monitoring of legislative objectives and general governmental relations in support of plans and projects, make regular presentations to the Board of Directors regarding the status of legislation affecting the District and its programs, and managing state and federal lobbying efforts. Additional responsibilities include supervising professional staff, and other duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates should have sufficient education, training and experience to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through, but not limited to: a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public Policy, or a closely related field, plus experience in the area of policy development, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. A Master's degree in Planning, Public Policy or related field is highly desirable.
