Small corner store....should we even try anymore?

After re-reading “Death and Life of Great American Cities” and listening to Jacob’s discuss the importance of mixed-use neighborhoods, and highlights the “corner grocery,” which I’m sure anyone reading this would agree with. However idealized and loved the corner grocery store is, is it possible to still have one in today’s economic structure, in which small equals the 15,000 sq ft. Walgreen’s or CVS? Should planners and urban designers even try to leave space on the corner of a mainly residential block for a small and local convenience store?
