The Mother Of All Boondoggles
The People's Waterfront Coalition (PWC), a group of Seattle activists is lobbying Washington State officials to abandon its costly Bostonesque Alaska Way Viaduct replacement project.
PWCs alternative, which continues to be ignored by the Washington State Department of Transportation, calls for a four lane surface boulevard with improved opportunities for transit and freight mobility, enhanced salmon habitat and a significant new open space to reconnect Seattleites with their central waterfront.
In its myopic commitment to the automobile, the Washington State Department of Transportation has convinced Mayor Nickels to throw his weight behind a costly tunnel option for [replacing the Alaska Way] viaduct, pushing Seattle to anchor its future to the status quo of the past: highways.
