Local opposition to poorly designed apartments threatens the "compact city" growth strategy for Auckland region.

But previously development has been uncoordinated with a "light-handed planning regime" and locals are up in arms against apartments invading their leafy suburbs. "The increasingly concerned and incresaingly loud voice of community groups may leave them no choice whatsoever [to introduce an element of compulsion in urban design controls]".
